Default Perspectives into the experience of successful long-term weight-loss maintenance

Perspectives into the experience of successful, substantial long-term weight-loss maintenance: a systematic review

From Dr Gabrielle Lyon:
Quote:
I’m going to be honest, the statistics on long-term weight loss success are not great. In a meta-analysis of 29 long-term weight loss studies, more than half of the lost weight was regained within two years, and by five years more than 80% of lost weight was regained. So, what does it take to lose weight and keep it off?

This review aimed to understand how people successfully maintain weight loss by examining their personal experiences, challenges, and strategies. The authors were looking for the secrets to long-term weight loss and weight management. What they found was that individuals who engaged in continuous self-monitoring and setting personalized, evolving goals are crucial. Support from peers and healthcare professionals, regular physical activity, and having a clear plan for setbacks also play important roles. Successful maintainers often found motivation through positive experiences and the desire to improve their self-image and social opportunities. Authors also noticed that individuals who lose weight also face challenges like fear of regaining weight and criticism from unsupportive peers.

Overall, this study shows that personalized, structured plans and support systems are essential for long-term weight loss maintenance. Individuals need to (independently or collaboratively with a professional) create a realistic and achievable plan that includes tools for tracking progress, regular feedback, and support from peers. When we truly understand the motivations behind and challenges to weight loss efforts, we can design programs accordingly, leading to better long-term weight loss success.

Perspectives into the experience of successful, substantial long-term weight-loss maintenance: a systematic review

ABSTRACT

Purpose:
In light of the increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity, understanding the experiences, strategies and challenges encountered when trying to achieve substantial, sustainable weight loss is an important area to investigate. We systematically evaluated qualitative studies focusing on the accounts of individuals who have achieved sustained weight loss to create a comprehensive picture of the experience of sustainable weight loss.

Methods: Included studies were peer-reviewed studies that qualitatively assessed the views and experiences of adults who previously had or currently have overweight or obesity who successfully lost weight and who subsequently maintained or regained weight. The evidence was systematically synthesized, which enabled the formulation of clear themes and recommendations.

Results: The 15 chosen studies included the accounts of 294 individuals. We found that continuous monitoring and goal setting, driven by sustained motivation and encouraging experiences, while resisting ever present challenges and enduring discouraging experience encapsulates the experience of sustained, substantial weight loss.

Conclusions: This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the experiences, strategies and challenges encountered when trying to achieve substantial, sustained weight loss. Additional research taking into account findings from this review and others of its kind will enhance the formulation of treatment protocols.
