I don't know how much your fella weights but 1500 calories per day is way too little for just about any man! I hope he doesn't intake that little on a regular basis. I am a slight woman and I can easily maintain on that!
Remember, this is supposed to be easing you into a lifetime of good habits - eating enough, eating your veggies. I think lotsa people (particularly men?) do it in the most drastic fashion and end up crashing and burning. The ATkins plan is drastic enough without narrowing the parameters, IMHO.

And, yes, the nausea will pass if the program is done properly.
