Ok - this is what I've found
According to Mr Michel "flaky" Montignac - a little wine high in tannin (i.e. red, not white) helps to reduce LDL cholesterol (bad) and raise HDL cholesterol (good).
Make sure you have wine that is dry, and not "manipulated" to make it more palatable.
he suggests extreme moderation in phase 1, and 2-3 glasses ok in phase 2.

NGR says (and I'm paraphrasing):- Alcoholic beverages contain very little carbs. Most wines and liquors contain virtually none. Beer does.
Haven't been able to find specific GI values though
