I know what you mean ... there's a saying "even sunshine will burn if you get too much".
About the picolinate form of chromium .. it's certainly been controversial. Reports of cancer link, and potential risk of DNA mutation in humans, as well as decreased antioxidant activity have been around since at least the mid-90's. Here's an article posted in the Berkeley Wellness Letter (1999).
Once upon a time, there was an excellent website called the Chromium Information Bureau. It was a great site, well-researched, and links to credible information, much of which debunked the anti-chromium reports. It's disappeared of the face of the Earth though Nonetheless, the site owner, Dr. Barry Mennen M.D. .. has published numerous articles on the benefits and safety of chromium supplementation, one of which can be read at Diabetic.com (1996).
It's good to be aware that there's at least a potential for risk, and to stay informed.
