Cool A rookie on the board

Hey everybody,

I'm new to this board (by way of a board at Dr. Bernstein's site) but not new to low carbing. I started back in August after a trip to the beach where a bunch of those "Greenpeace types" kept tryin' to drag my back into the water! Well, that got old pretty quick, so as soon as I got home, I began the Protein Power Life Plan and I love it!

I'll have to admit that I haven't been real "hardcore" about this, but something happened in my life that made me realize just how lucky I am to be relatively healthy (other than being obese), and as such, I'd better start getting serious and taking care of myself.

Like I said earlier, I came to this board on a recommendation from a board at Dr. Bernstein's site. I'd been there because about 3 weeks ago, my 17 year old son was diagnosed as a Type 1 diabetic. While it's always tragic and never fair that anyone be diagnosed with this disease, it was especially tough for my son. He was a virtual "shoe-in" for an NROTC (Marine option) scholarship to Auburn Univerisity, and being a diabetic is an automatic disqualification for any military service. This is a kid who never even drank a soft drink until a couple of years ago! His bodyfat percentage is in the low teens, and he is in outstanding physical condition and he gets hit with diabetes. I, on the other hand have let myself go from 195 lbs to 352 lbs after his mom and I divorced, and in spite of that, have relatively normal BP and blood sugars. But, I figure the Lord won't let me squander this good fortune for long, so I've decided to ramp it up again and get serious about this.

My son, despite the fact that he obviously doesn't have weight problem, sees the value in this WOE. His nutritionist is naturally espousing the typical ADA rhetoric (high carb, low fat, low protein) and he is already questioning it. He is very interested in Dr. Bernstein's work and will be exploring it more as time goes on.

Sorry if this was kinda long, but this was my path to this site. I think from what I've seen so far, I'm gonna like it here.
