Changing the option in your profile (the default when you register is set to "yes, receive email notification") .. will prevent notification from threads/ posts that come after .. but you will remain subscribed to threads that came before that time.

What you need to do is: go to any one of the notification emails. In it, you'll see the option to unsubscribe from that particular thread, and also all threads. Select the "all threads" option ... that should do the trick.
