The trainer that I work out with also recommends fruit prior to a workout.
I think that all this obsessing about fructose goes to the liver and glucose to the muscles is pretty much blah blah in terms of how it might affect a workout, one's glycogen level, general level of health, stamina, etc.
A lot of weightlifter types seem to get really caught up in attempting to manipulate their body chemistry.
