From Dr Atkins Vita Nutrients page 40

Quote:
It is the combination of oxygen with antioxidant nutrients that will maximize its most positive health benefit. Oxygen is like the electricity that runs your appliances, and antioxidants are the protective shields that insulate it and keep it from burning down your house. You need them both.

In Chapter 7, Fat based nutrition, Dr Atkins talks about Squalene on page 217.

Quote:
Oxygen is the great forgotten nutrient - and the gret forgotten nutrient deficiency. A lack of it has been pinpointed as a cause of or contributing factor to nearly all our degenerative diseases. Squalene is the closest thing we have to an oxygen supplement.

From the above article, It appears that the amount of oxygen available for absorption is dependent upon both the heart and lungs. You can have great lungs but if your circulation is poor ... The problem with most people like us is that they have respiratory problems and circulation/heart problems. But low carb diet fixed both of those for me in months.
