I've been on metformin for 2 years and started Atkins June 4/02. Exactly 1 month later my doctor took me OFF metformin, as my blood sugar level is basically normal. I did find though that when I went off the metformin my weight loss stopped for a couple of weeks until my body came out of the shock. Between losing 17 lbs and then having my meds stop I'm sure my bod didn't know what the heck I was doing, so watch your blood sugar levels, if it stays between 5.0 and 6.2 you probably should talk again with the doc, you probably don't need the metformin if you're type 2 and not on anything else. My doctor was concerned about sugar levels dropping too much, it's not supposed to happen with metformin but with my sugar levels at 5.2 to 5.9 regularly now, she said I don't need it. Yahoo!!!
Hope this helps, metformin does help a bit with the weight loss as it curbs appetite a bit but I have started to adjust physically to everything now and feel great.
