Fran McCullough discusses liver cleansing, albeit briefly, in her book Living Low-Carb. She mentions Sandra Cabot's Liver Cleansing Diet (thanks tobethin ) .. and there's a website where you can find more information. http://www.liverdoctor.com/

Milk thistle has a proven track record for cleansing a sluggish liver, and some studies show it will even stimulate regrowth of liver tissue that's been damaged .. by toxins, alcohol, drugs including prescription meds. McCullough states:
Quote:
If you're stuck on a long plateau, as I've sometimes been for months, the problem could be your liver. If the liver isn't functioning at its peak, the reasoning goes, it can't filter out all the toxins properly, and so it binds fat to the toxins in an effort to protect the body from them. The fat cells enlarge to be more effective, and the liver ceases doing its job of getting rid of fat -- no matter what you're eating, you won't lose fat unless your liver is working properly. And when the liver is finally cleaned of its excess fatty deposits and toxins, they're sent directly into the bloodstream -- which is why you need to drink lots of water when you're cleansing your liver.
