I lost the bulk of my weight (excuse the pun) without exercise. Actually, since beginning exercising I've lost only a small amount of pounds, but the inches are getting better and I feel so much better in my own skin.
I'm not sure that exercise is essential for the initial weight loss, but at a certain stage it's probably a good idea to add at least resistance exercise (weights) because added muscle mass burns more calories when just sitting there. And, as several have mentioned, you also just look better as you lose your weight.
