all I know from my own experience is that I can eat all I want Atkins style and keep my weight right where it is now, about 15- 20 pounds over where I'd like it to be. Which is fine, that's much better than my pre-Atkins state at about 35 pounds heavier. (btw, I am the same height at Dr. Atkins and weigh the same as he did when he checked into the hospital, 195) But to lose more, I am pretty sure I'm gonna have to watch calories, and the only way to really do that is to cut out some of the fats and watch my portions.... so it seems, for me at least, calories do matter.

also, I've spent the last year keeping my carbs down near induction levels and have not been able to lose any more weight. So, again just for me at least, carb counts dont seem to be a controlling factor, as long as they are low enough. At this point, it seems to me that if I want to lose more weight I should add some more carbs back to my diet and cut out some of the fat.
