Don't worry about the garlic, you are talking to an immigrant kid whose favorite snack was chopped raw garlic sprinkled on caraway rye bread. I would also rub the crust of the bread with fresh garlic. Yummy. White bread and soda had been invented but you never saw them at our place. In fact, you never saw anything processed at our place.
