Other cool weather crops you can try would be lettuce in almost any form, spinach and swiss chard. I'm looking forward to my ground thawing enough to get the lettuce, spinach and chard going, it's really getting expensive at the store.

As for growing things in pots, I have tremendous luck with both standard and grape tomatoes, peppers (sweet and hot) and herbs of all types. I even have perennial herbs like sage, thyme and rosemary in my flower beds. Great for cooking, scents and foliage contrast in the beds.
