New World adds low-carb bagel to menu

Another Colorado company is hoping to tap into low-carbohydrate diet trend.

Golden-based New World Restaurant Group, which operates the Einstein Brothers and Noah's New York Bagel chains, announced today that it has developed a bagel with a quarter of the typical carbs.

The product, which is branded the "Lower Carb 9 Grain Bagel" at Einstein Brothers, contains 18 net grams of carbohydrates, compared to 75 net grams in the chain's average bagel, according to a press release. The new bagel also packs more protein --- 25 grams compared to the average 11 grams in a plain bagel.

The bagel is part of a new lower-carb, lower-fat menu, which includes bagel sandwiches with egg, turkey or tuna salad. Each contains less than 25 grams of carbs and 10 grams of fat, according to New World.

Low-carb bagels will be available at all Einstein and Noah's stores by the end of January, the company said.

New World's franchises -- Manhattan Bagel Company and Chesapeake Bagel Bakery -- plan to introduce their own versions in March.
