Default is walking enough?

I'm not talking a nice little stroll, i'm talking a fast paced walk while pushing my 3 yo in her jogging stroller. I've tried taking her to the gym with me, but she won't sit for more then 10 minutes and she wants to go check everyone out. Hubby works a second job apart from the military and works most evenings of the weeks which is the only time I can really go to the gym. We don't really know anybody I'd trust watching our daughter, and can't afford to pay for a daycare- we're broke as broke can be- so this diet should be cheap for us lol.
Anyhow, For a while I was walking 5 to 8 miles every morning. Course I wasn't doing the Atkins thing then and didn't lose anything. If I stick with it is that enough exercise? I was doing 5 yo 8 miles in around an hour to hour and a half with no resting.
