I read this too
I think maybe these people are just an ascetic type, and like to deny themselves of things. They feel it's righteous and they get some enjoyment out of it. In earlier times, perhaps they would become monks, choosing some sect that denies itself a lot.
Whereas we here in LC land are the hedonists! 
I just read this joke on another board and had to share:

"Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf?" he said. "No, I don't," I said.
He said, "Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or fool around?" "No," I said. "I've never done any of those things."
He looked at me and said, "Then why do you give a sh*t if you live to be 80?"
