Don't, whatever you do, give up exercise because of a small gain!!
This summer I took up cycling and within the first week, gained 6 pounds. That six pounds has stayed with me but there is no difference in the fit of my clothing and trust me, I like things on the tight side, so I'd notice. What has happened though is that my legs have undergone a remarkable re-shaping and in fact, I had a gentleman tell me recently that he admired my "muscular legs". This is a first for me!!
