Default I don't get it

There is one thing about the soy question that has always puzzled me. Perhaps someone can provide me with an answer.

They look at Asian women, whose lifestyles differ in many, many ways from those of North American women, and they say, "Oh, the difference in breast cancer rates must be due to the soy". Why the heck do they think this? Maybe it's the large amounts of fish they eat, or the seaweed. Maybe it's the fact that they walk a lot more than us. Maybe it's, well, you get the idea. I just don't understand how they can sort out all of this and focus in on the soy. And BTW, as I understand it, much of the soy that Asians eat is fermented naturally, and differs a great deal from the genetically modified soy in this country that goes through horrendous industrial processing before it winds up on the grocery store shelves.

My own opinion is that the American soy growers latched on to the idea of soy as health food and have been promoting that idea vigorously by paying for studies that find just what they want them to find.

I don't know. Maybe soy really is good for me, but to this point I am not convinced of it. Frankly, it's hard to avoid it these days, unless you make your own mayo, salad dressings, etc. I figure I take in so much soy inadvertently that there's no way I'll sit down to tofu turkey or whatever.
