I've just read a wonderful book on this and related topics--called Fatland by Greg Critser. It indicts HFCS and large portion sizes in restaurants and take-outs, and also squarely blames the government for softening and "dumbing down" guidelines for diet and exercise.

It's not a LC endorsement per se, but it's a terrific read on why Americans tend to be fatter than people in other nations.
