Default Epsom salt as a long-term laxative

I have a chronic constipation problem that has lasted for years. My method of remedy: 4 tablespoons epsom salt in 12 ounces of water, taken internally every 5 days. Almost always works. I know this is a LOT... but lesser amounts don't work.

My question is: does anyone know of any definite, documented side effects or dangers of long term internal epsom salt usage?

The above method may not be the ideal... it's just what I've come up with by experimentation. The alternative appears to be surgery or death (unless I can find another, preferable laxative).

Any comments, experiences, etc?
