Type 1 diabetics can certainly do well on low carb.

Dr Richard Bernstein, author of Dr Bernstein's Diabetes Solution, is a type 1. In fact, he was able to reverse his diabetes related kidney failure by following LC.

He does suggest, as I believe did Dr Atkins, that insulin dependent diabetics should be under close medical supervision when they take up low carbing.
