Actually, it does add up to the sum of the parts:

BG 145 minus BG 85 = 60 point rise. Since each gram of carb raises BG's by 5 points, 60/5 = 12 grams of carbs.

The crust and pizza sauce (tomato sauce, SUGAR, and spices) can easily have 12 grams of carbs.

Most people forget about all the SUGAR in pizza sauce, because the acidity masks the sweetness.
