Yes -- you can! Perhaps you should buy your friend with the new baby a copy of "The Little Engine That Could" (I think I can, I think I can, I think I can!) and read it yourself!
I find that journaling thoughts is more important than journaling food intake. So much of doing this is getting into the proper mindset, and at least for me (I'm a person who has always thought better when I get my thoughts into written words), journaling how I feel about losing weight while I am doing it helps me stay focused on why I want to lose the weight.
