Different people's metabolisms react in different ways to sugar alcohols. Some seem to do fine, while others seem to stall out. I asked a dietician about it a couple of weeks ago (a really unusual professional who doesn't have a knee-jerk reaction against any diet other than low-fat). She advised that when computing nutritional values, she always takes Total Carbs, then subtract *all* the fiber and *one-half* of the sugar alcohols. This approach produces a considerably different calculation than the advertised ECC on most labels.

I've yet to try the Atkins shakes, but the Endulge and Carbolite bars haven't given me any problems yet (fingers crossed).
