Out of curiosity I have tried just a bite of bread now and again in restaurants, probably not enough to trigger any physical reaction, but I have noticed that I don't actually like the stuff anymore; it just tastes like gummy stuff, pasty and icky. Makes it easy to resist, that's for sure!
