What's the deal with deli?

Can someone please explain to me how a 2oz serving of deli-style roast beef has 2 grams of carbs (according to fitday), while an oz or more of sliced roast beef has zero carbs? I don't get it.

guess you now know what I had for lunch :bash:

I think it's because deli-style meats usually have added sugars , but if you bought a raw slab of beef and roasted it, you're not adding that sugar to it.

Hi Crimson:

I was just looking at the ingredients for some deli turkey meat and it has dextrose in it. Some of the other's I've looked at have sugar in them. I can't say for sure with the roast beef though since I don't normally buy it. Anyway, I guess it's just another reason to distrust processed food. :daze:

HTH,

Depending on Brand

First, I only eat one brand of cold cuts BOARS HEAD. I have their nutritional pamphlet and their roast beef, turkey breast and many other cold cuts have "0" carbs and no sugar or fillers. And when BOARS HEAD is not available, I ask to see the "ingredients" on the cold cut - and most deli people are OK to show me the packaging. Not to say I won't buy a cold cut that has "sugar" as last ingredient (remember, the lower on the ingredient listing the less the product has) but I am weary with certain products like "sausages", bolognas, frankfurthers, salamis....unless I know for sure their carb count.

I have been eating ham, liverwurst, turkey and roastbeef thru out my WOE with no problems. I also get the "low-sodium" versions if available.

The deli that I go to has house roasted turkey breast and pork. both are delicious. The other deli meats, I stay away from. Can't stand the rubber turkey anyway.

Boars Head is my brand too.

Yvonne: What do you eat your liverwurst on? I have always liked it, but never eaten it on anything but bread.

Is there a place online that you can get the Boars Head nutritional information? I went to their website but it's still under construction.

I've cut out all deli meat since I'm in Induction, but I'd love to add in some Boar's Head if it's OK.

Which Boars Head meats have NO sugar, honey, sweeteners or Nitrates? Do the low-sodium cuts also have none of these additives? I've noticed that sometimes, "low fat" or "low sodium" versions of food had alot of added preservatives and stuff.

Thanks!!!

OK, I've been holding back and trying not to say anything, but has anyone ever told you you look like Lori Loughlin (Becky from Full House)? In your picture you look very much like her :) I always thought she was so pretty :)

Are we talking about deli meat that is behind the counter and they cut for you --- or the deli meat that is pre-packaged? or both?

Is there a difference in carbs? I've been eating lots of black forest ham and roast beef that is freshly sliced from behind the counter. i figured it was better than the stuff in the package...help!

Crimson Thu, Apr-10-03 19:20

I'm talking about the kind that is sliced by the deli. I'll have to ask next time what brand they sell and the carb count. Darn. :(
