Hi Liz,

I've seen a few posts now from folk who have also had this problem.

Have a look at this site where Lora of Low Carb Luxury addresses the problem. I hope you'll find it very reassuring!

Hair loss

Don't panic yet! I had some extensive hair loss in October/November. I was low-carbing since July. After doing a lot of research on the Internet (entered "hair losss in women"), I discovered it was in fact diet related. The bottom line was that after several months on any diet - even the high protein ones - your body suddenly discovers that you are dieting & goes into a temporary shock of sorts. My hair loss as slowed down considerably since then. Pretty much back to "normal". If you are really concerned, consider seeing your doctor and have your blood work done. That will calm your fears - at least it calmed my fears, since that is the route I took in late November. Keep smiling :) Cheryl

Thanks guys I feel better and Im not going off of this WOE .Ill stick this out just like Ive done everyhing else. You've been a great help and I feel ALOT BETTER! Thanks

It's not this WOE, it's the fact that you've lost a lot of weight in a fairly short period of time. Any diet might have done the same. In fact, with all the protein, you'll most likely start growing more back, better than ever.

If you have any fears though, or heritary baldness in your family, get a scalp biopsy done and find out what's going on.

It's true...any shock to your system whether it be emotional or physical stress or a big change in diet can result in temporary hair loss. It's often difficult to discover precisely what triggered the hair loss as the loss is usually seen about 4 months after the event that caused it. The good news is that it's usually temporary and will start growing back soon.
If it continues, it might be good to go see your doctor. Hair loss can also be a symptom of other problems such as hypothyroid or vitamin/mineral deficiency.

You also lose a lot of hair after giving birth.

Funny you should mention 4 months. My daughter is 4 1/2 months old now...and my hair was falling a lot. It's getting better now and isn't clogging up the drain anymore.

We have a thread here on the subject too.

I buy into the "shock to the system" theory too. My weight loss has been very slow , 23 lbs in 6 mos , so much less of a shock to the system and my hair is as good, if not better ,than ever.

Biotin is another great supplement to take for hair loss! Been there done that!

Don't rely on getting reassurance from doctors. Most of them ho no clue. I've been to three already, and even the one who is trying to help, doesn't know as much as I've learned on this and other forums.

I suggest having your thyroid checked. Hair falling out is one of the symptoms of low thyroid hormones.

mariejoe Sun, Aug-03-03 09:45

Ii went to an endo for all that blood work. Everthing came back normal. Except, she wouldn't/couldn't check my estrogen or progesterone. "I only do garden variety hormones". :daze: I have a new gyn appt Tues. I'm telling ya, it's hormone imbalance, this mess all started after I began HRT in fall 2001! [estrogen/progesterone out of balance].
My gyn wouldn't even consider that the HRT could cause hair loss or loss of libido. I am fast losing respect for doctors.

I have also read articles about hair loss being associated with people that eat a lot of canned tuna. Believe it or not it could be caused by too much mercury in your system. The article mentioned that for some people, even one can of tuna a week is too much. Do you eat canned tuna? Just a thought.
