Is it possible to become more sensitive to sugar alcohols over time?

I am wondering if it is possible to suddendly become very sensitive to polytyls? I always used to have quite a bit of sugar free chocolate before I started to seriously low carb, but now I instantly get laxative effects.

The difference now though is that I am LCing properly, on a specific plan, eating less carbs overall. Could this be the reason why I am sensitive to them?

Help! I need my dessert sometimes!

Hmmm... that is interesting! I know that when I eat that stuff, I can only have a little bit.... like 1/2 bar or 1 truffle at the most. How much are you having a day...or at one time?

I think you can become more sensitive. At least that was my experience. When I first started to LC, I would have at least one protein bar a day, full of maltitol. Sometimes I had more. I did this for a couple of months with no ill effect.

BUT, recently, whenever I have some LC chocolate (with s.a.) I always get the bloating and digestional problems...even with half of a bar.

I've now learned to have these items only every couple of weeks. I have actually had better results having a real piece of chocolate, as opposed to the "fake" kind. I just don't spulrge like I use to.....one or two pieces is fine.

Shutt - Unfortunetly, I am totally addicted to sugar. I can't have just one or two peices of the real stuff or else I end up getting back into having it at every meal.

Teri- I don't have it everyday, say maybe three or four bars a week. When I was just doing a low GI, but still high carb diet I could have 1 and a half bars at one time no problem. Now one bar gets me rushing to the toilet.

This is really upsetting me!!!!!!!!!

Hello Scarlet.
Low carbing has two possible effects on intestinal function.
One of these is constipation.
The other effect is diarrhea.

I get the second one. So I take a capsule of psyllium husks every day to make things more normal. The capsule is handier to swallow than the powder form. Psyllium is also the treatment for constipation.

If you could eat the bars before LCing, I'd bet that LC has the same effect on you as it does on me. :p

Interesting Tofu, I may try taking that before I eat LC bars.

Anyone else?

Those chocolates with polyols definitely upset my gut. :( Have you considered making your own out of Splenda? I've made them a few times, and they came out pretty good. It wasn't too sweet; they were more like protein bars than a chocolate bar, but that was good enough for me. If you're interested, there are a few recipes posted - do a search for 'protein bars' and just search the kitchen forums.

As my mother's diabetes grew worse over time, she became more and more responsive to sugar alcohols. This might be a different situation than responsive due to low carbing, though.
