"Ketostix", or LTS strips, same a PH test???

Hello all,

concerning "Ketostix", or LTS strips for testing keytone existance....don't these simply test for acid vs PH in urine and therefore wouldn't a simple PH test suffice? What would be a target PH level to demonstrate I am in a fat burning mode?

Thank you all in advance

no...ketones are different...it's a by product of fat metabolism. Not sure if the PH would be changed by ketones, but having a high or low ph wouldn't indicate ketosis.

Ketosticks are not necessary....and may say to avoid them as they can be very frustrating. If you do use them, positive is positive....not the degree of positive (trace, moderate, etc). And if you're following the plan you will be in ketosis, even if the strips don't say you are.

Hi there Toe,

No, pH has nothing to do with ketosis - they are two different things.

And as Cindy says, once you're in ketosis, you're in. In fact the lightest shade of the pink is best, because it means you are drinking plenty of water.

And the best way to demonstrate that you are burning fat is loss of inches and/or weight!

Happy low carbing!

Thanx for your reply....PH is the oppisite of Acid in a continum of Base vs Acid.I think so, I could be wrong....if keytones are a form of acid, why wouldn't the PH test work...it would demonstrate the degree of acid in the urine opposed to base or PH....or am I missing something? How's the difference manifest....

Thank you again, and for the encouragement

Hullo again Toe,

First of all, pH is a measure of acidity or alkilinity. A pH over 7 means something is acid, below 7, it is alkaline. A pH of 7 is neutral. Urinary pH is not, as far as I am aware, affected by ketosis.

For more information on ketones, have a look at "Ketosis and Ketone Test Strips" under Low Carb Tips on the orange bar at the top of the screen.
