GREEN TEA--Does is really speed your metabolism without carbs or calories??
Hey guys--just wondering if you guys know about this--does green tea really speed up your metabolism? That would be really great to know.
No calories or carbs, right? And you would still have to drink plenty of water? If anyone knows about this, please tell me! Ana |
Green tea does indeed increase metabolism by creating a thermogenic effect in the body. It will increase resting metabolism by approximately 4% over a 24 hour period. However, you have to drink quite a bit of it to get this effect. Roughly 10 cups of tea are required to notice any metabolic side effects. You could do what many of us do if you don't want to drink tea all day and take the extract that comes in pill form. One capsule will typically contain the equivallent of 10 cups of tea and have no caffiene.
BTW, the active ingredient in Green tea is not the caffeine. It is believed that the catechin-polyphenols found in green tea are what effect the levels of norepinephrine in the body causing energy to be wasted and therefore more to be required. Look for an extract that is standardized to at least 60% polyphenols. If you choose to drink the tea be sure you get a caffinated blend, as the decaf is much weaker than the regular. And never add cream or milk as this will negate the thermogenic effects. All teas and coffees contain some carbs / calories - but very few. If you use the carb counter tool on this forum (under LC Tools atop every page in orange highlight) you can get an exact count for various types of teas and coffees. HTH Nat |
Wow thank you! that information is especially helpful. I didn't realize that black coffee could have carbs, so now I'm DEFINTETLY checking that situation out.

I've been drinking green tea too. I bought a box in the summer and never got into it. But since I'm so limited on beverages now I've been trying new things.
I've also taken a liking to Kava Kava tea and St. Johns Wort tea. Helps keep you less stressed out. I fed a cup of it to my friend because he was freaking out about his girlfriend (like always, what a paranoid bugger) and like 30 min later he totally calmed down. Works like a charm :P I searched up green tea on the net just the other day, and found this site: http://www.japanesegreenteaonline.com/health.htm There's one part that really stands out to me, and thats this one: Quote:
Sounds like it could be just perfect for a diet like this. So even the carbs you do eat dont cause your blood sugar to spike. The only thing I worry about is the caffeine. Currently its the only source of that in my diet. I'm only on day 4 of induction,s o Id ont know if thats a problem yet. But I hope not! |

This is why many of us use the extract - it is virtually caffeine free. Nat |

Typical dosage recommendations are for 125-500mg/day – preferably of an extract standardized to at least 60% polyphenols and/or EGCG as a marker compound (this should be equivalent to 4-10 cups of brewed green tea). You should try and find a product that has at least 60% polyphenols when that batch is done. You should be fine with the dosage as stated - but you want to check that the numbers are for one pill or one dose (which could be two pills). Nat |
Thanks
I can't say weither it's speeds up my metabolism. But I have noticed an increase of energy, which is the main reason I started taking Green tea, plus it's good for you.

Green tea ummmmm
I love to drink green tea! If you are going to brew it (rather than supplements), try it in bulk. This way you can vary the strength to taste and also try many different blends. I buy it from Stash.com or from the local Asian market -- there are hundreds of varieties. Any green tea I've purchased in bags doesn't have nearly the flavor -- maybe not as much good stuff??
Enjoy your tea! |
green tea and lemon
I usually drink green tea, lemon juice and stevia or splenda
with my meals, and I have noticed that when I do. I lose more weight, and have less bloating, which I sometimes get at TOM. |
YAY!
I love green tea, took me a while to warm to it , but I have run out at the moment and I am having to drink the leftover bags of my old favourite... Earl Grey.. but it just isn't doing it for me.... must buy some today... good suggestion about buying in bulk.... :D

Green Tea and Other Stuff
I read up a lot on various supplements, using the sources Nat noted in an earlier thread (they were VERY helpful!). As a result, I am now taking Green Tea, Primrose Oil, Fish Oils and a couple of other things.
A question for those in the know: In general how long does it take for you to feel the effects of supplements? Joan PS: Lost a pound this week and am thrilled! |
Hi I am new to this fourm but I just have a quick question,
Natrushka and plenty of other people have said to Look for an extract that is standardized to at least 60% polyphenols. I just purchased a bottle and thought it said 63% equiv. catechin-polyphenols but actually reads camellia sinensis (green tea) ext. equiv. dry leaf 3.15g equiv. catechins 63mg it says one dose = 1 capsule, should I be taking two ??? or is this enough ??? thanks in advance for your help |
Weird. How did this post end up in new posts today?

Hmmmm...i Should Try It In A Pill Form*
