mountain food

Hi all

I'm looking for ideas on carb. replacement food suitable for tramping / mountaineering . It's impractical to haul all that vege. associated with the carbohydrate addict's lifespan diet up a mountain.

cheers Murray

Beef Jerky, macadamia nuts and any berries you find along the way (if they arent the poisonous type)

Almonds, pecans, walnuts, cheese.

I'm glad someone posted about this, I was going to ask it myself. Well, along the same topic.

I'll be doing a short trek (3-4 days) in the alps and was wondering what I should eat. For my normal hiking I find low carb is best, but do you think that for this more strenuous and all day hiking/climbing I should incorperate more carbs... or would that set me up to "bonk" or hit the wall or whatever...

Any advice/experience/stories are appreciated!

Meg

I ski, snowboard, and hike, so when I'm really going to be working hard at high altitudes, I like trail mixes, which are nuts, dates, figs raisins, cranberries, dehydrated berries. Dried fruits are good. Also granola.
These mixes are available commercially but can be pricey. They are easy to mix up yourself and carry in ziploc bags.
Take lots of water. I use a Camelback.

Granola? Trail Mix?

I'm sorry....but is this low carb?

The original question was about carb replacement for mountaineering.
The suggestions are based on the idea that if you are undertaking high altitude extreme exercise you may need to consume more carbs than you might otherwise need.
As Meg_S says, for normal hiking staying locarb is probably ok.
Here in Colorado we have big mountains. My house is at 7100 feet, yet when I go to about 10000 feet and start hiking up a big hill I can bonk very quickly. Experienced people keep some carbs handy just in case.
