Diet V8 Splash..... low carb? really?

I noticed something new the other day. Diet V8 Splash. Of course I picked it up and read the Carb Count..... 3....... it said it only had 3g per serving.

Is this too good to be true?

(I didn't buy any and I can't remember the ingredients exactly.)

.....I love that stuff......

But what was the serving size?

Sometimes juice has a serving size of only 4-6 oz.

This is somewhat deceptive--just like Coke which says the calories per serving and you must read the small print to see that a 12 oz can has 1 1/2 servings in it.

I've never seen that stuff, so I don't know the ingredients, but at only 3 g carb per serving, it can't be real juice. The real stuff is carrot and fruit based. The diet stuff must be pretty artificial. May as well buy Crystal Light or something.

Yeah but...

...now read how much SALT is in there. That is if you are affected by salt.

doreen T Fri, Apr-05-02 12:49

According to the V8 website, the product does indeed provide 10 calories and 3g carb (2g sugar) per 8 fl. oz (240 ml) serving. 0g protein and 0g fat, but these are likely rounded values. It's sweetened with Splenda .. but I didn't find an ingredients list anywhere, just the nutrient data.

I haven't seen it available in Canada yet. Like Kristine, I'm curious to know just how much real juice there is ... or if it's just a small amount of carrot juice, water and "natural fruit flavors" ??

8 fl oz. V8 Splash has 35mg sodium, according to Corrine T. Netzer's Complete Food Counts book. True, that's the non-diet version, but I doubt there would be a lot of added salt in a sweet fruit-flavoured beverage.

Regular V8 tomato-vegetable juice on the other hand, is high .. 620mg per 8 fl oz serving.

OK People, I've got the bottle right in front of me! ;)

No, it is not high in sodium, that is regular V8, not the Splash.

It has 25mg sodium and 35mg of Potassium...

vitamin A 100%
vitamin C 130%
vitamin E 20%

(glug, glug, AH!)

A serving size is 8 fluid oz.

It is made with fruit and vegetable juice concentrates and has no artificial flavors, and the only "chemical" component is Red 40.

Yes it is sweetened with Splenda, thank goodness, as I try to stir clear of Aspartame.

Believe me, those three grams of carbs are worth it in the AM sometimes to break up the monotony of my eggs, eggs, eggs! :daze:

Too curious...

Are there any sugar alcohols?? I really wish there was a low carb red grapefruit... sigh... I miss the tast...

nsmith4366 Fri, Apr-05-02 14:35

What about

Citric Acid? That stall me COLD.

Please, can you list all the ingredients?
Thanks

Shellyf34 Fri, Apr-05-02 14:41

Nope! No sugar alcohols, just Splenda! :D

For Pink Grapefuit, once and a while I will have one serving of Diet Snapple Pink Grapefruit (sometimes I mix it with mineral water...).

No citric acid either, Yay! Only Ascorbic Acid (aka vitamin C).

OK, the entire ingredient label reads (this is for Diet V8 Splash, Strawberry Kiwi):

Water, carrot juice from concentrate, fruit juices from concentrate (water, apple juice concentrate, kiwi juice concentrate, strawberry juice concentrate), natural flavoring, malic acid, vitamin C (ascorbic acid), vitamin E (Alpha Tocopheryl Acetate), Sucralose (Splenda), Beta Carotene, Acesulfame Potassium (Potassium), Red 40.

That's it!

Sugar is sugar

Okay, not for me. "carrot juice from concentrate, fruit juices from concentrate, apple juice concentrate, kiwi juice concentrate, strawberry juice concentrate". Now I'm only speaking for MYSELF - but I know these are all very concentrated forms of sugar. Carrots are extremely high glycemic - I'm off fruit completely no matter where it is. Those 3 carbs are pure sugar carbs and as long as I am still chosing the KIND of carbs I put in, I still choose NO sugar. My carbs will only be from lc veggies/I can't afford to use that carb space for anything but serious vitamins & minerals. Unlike real v8 this drink cannot have the nutrition that real v8 has...it's all fruit juice - and concentrated at that.

Bummer (for me).

Everyone else enjoy...and remember - stick to ONE serving...what is that? 8oz? Be careful...your typical kitchen glass is twice that size.

Peace everyone. N

Berry Blend... the diet version

Okay..... here is another complete ingredient list.... from the V8 Splash Berry Blend....

Serving Size 8oz.
Calories 10g
Total Fat 0g
Sodium 30mg
Potassium 90mg
Total Carbohydrate 3g
sugars 2g
Protien 0g

vitamin A 100%
vitamin C 130%
vitamin E 20%

Ingredients: water, carrot juice from conc.(water, carrot juice concentrate),fruit juices from concentrate (water, apple juice conc., cherry juice conc., strawberry juice conc., red raspberry juice conc.,wild blackberry juice concentrate),contains less than 2% of the following ingredients: vitamin C (ascorbic acid), natural flavoring, malic acid, citric acid, potassium citrate, vitamin e (alpha tocopheryl acetate), sucralose(splenda brand), a non- nutritive sweetner, red 40, acesulfame potassium, beta carotene

Thats it... word for word unless I made a spelling error while squinting to read the print on the bottle while I typed it.

I decided that I will have to try it. Maybe just a little. It isn't a perfect product for most of us.... but it SURE is an improvement over most of our grocery store choices..... which I avoid like the plague.

I would like to hear feedback from those of you who do try it. I am curious to see how it affects us....and how many of us decide it is tooo sickening sweet and would rather just drink water! LOL

Let us know.......

V8 Diet Splash

In the south of the US (both GA and AL for certain) we can buy three flavors at Target stores: Kiwi Strawberry (I'm drinking it right now), Berry Blend, and Tropical Blend. All three are great.

Lessara Tue, Apr-09-02 10:27

shaking one's head

How can this be low carb with all those concentates??
It makes me nervous!
