Ensure debate

You guys won't believe this one. Last week I went to see my dietician and they now want me to lower my cholesterol. Their solution to my problem was to stop Atkins immediately and to start drinking boost or Ensure for 2 meals a day. My god, first they restrict my intake of carbs, then fats and now eggs, cheese, meats. What would a person eat I asked. And they suggested I drink that stuff. I thought that was crazy. How can a person live like that for the rest of their life? And besides that, Ensure is loaded with carbs. I am not going to tell them and just continue on with Atkins. No wonder most diabetics are out of control! Personally I like eating.

ye GODS! I went to look up Ensure to make sure...and it's 40 grams of pure sugar--corn syrup, sucrose, and maltodextrine (just so they don't miss ANY allergies, apparently. lol) It'd be healthier to chase a vitamin pill with a glass of honey.

Stick with food--you're right. Thanks for sharing. They should probably just horrify me, but stories like this about medical treatment do amuse me no end.

Shelley,

Wow, what a strange experience! Sometimes its just time to move on from a Doctor or other health care professional that seems out of touch with what your body needs. Sounds like you have a feel for whats right and wrong with the advice you are getting. Somehow, I doubt you will find may dieticians out there who would recommend Atkins. I think the feild has a lot of catching up to do; it just doesn't accomodate limited carbohydrate diet approaches. Meanwhile, tell your Doctor what happened. Sounds like you are doing a great job of listening to your body! Good luck!

Wow! The wonders of Canadian socialist medicine! :exclm: It's probably because the Canadian gvt has negociated with the company that makes Ensure on the price of a few billion litres of their... sugary "stuff"! In the meantime, you should have asked the doctor what trees those grow on! :p

My neighbors Doctor put her on a very strick low carb diet (with no meds), due to her weight and high cholesterol. In her first month her cholesterol went from 258 to 157!!! Now her doctor is telling her to eat more butter with her veggies and steaks:daze: !!!! I like this Doctor!!

Good Luck!!!

Challenge The "Experts"

Having been in the business, I think I know how your dieticians came to their recommendations. I won't go on a rant here and open myself up to lawsuits; but pick your favorite conspiracy theory, and you won't be too far off.

Another thing I have noticed about SOME dieticians is a very sheep like attitude. They follow the herd and don't seem to question the dictums from above. Another disturbing thing is that many I have known simply stopped doing any serious research after graduating.

Look at all the reversals that have happened in medicine over the years. How about salt? First its good, remember taking salt pills when sweating a lot? Then it was evil, enter the bland times! Then it was found innocent of the major crimes, but still suspicious. Today....who knows. My point is that we are still discovering how our bodies work. It is a great mystery and adventure. Beware of those who have ALL the answers! (given to them by "experts").

You are the customer, not the patient. Demand good service.
Ask for personal referances and phone numbers for others on the plan that your dietician has recommended . Suggest being the "control group" by going against all advice and eating high fat only. Oops this is getting a bit long.

Ensure?? Good Lord! That stuff's no better than downing a 1/4 cup of sugar with a vitamin pill! My cholesterol went up slightly (about 20 points to 218) after I started with WOE. The Doc wanted to start me on Lipitor immediately and the nurse was preaching "low fat" to me as I was leaving the office. I just smiled and thought.."If she ONLY knew, they'd have to get the crash cart out for HER" LOL Refused the Lipitor until a recheck which is coming up soon.
