Onions
It took me several weeks but I finally realized that onions are a major trigger food for me. I was putting about a tablespoon of chopped, raw onion on my salads and it caused me to crave carbohydrates. It did the same thing, causing cigaret cravings, when I quit smoking.
Weird! Anybody else have this problem? |
Mature onions do have a relatively high natural sugar content, but 1 Tbsp would only have 1g carb .. so I doubt that's the problem. Could it be a taste association?? For example, you used to enjoy onions on a hamburger or sandwich WITH bun .. so the taste of onions makes you crave the bread/bun?? Not sure about the cigs, unless once again there was an association of a habit that included onions at the same time as smoking?
Green onions (scallions) or chives are much lower in sugar & carbs than mature onions, you might try those and see if you have a similar reaction. If you do, then it's definitely a taste association, and best to avoid it. Doreen |
onions
I'm sure you're right - a taste association. I guess it is like smelling baking bread. I haven't noticed anything with cooked onions, just the raw ones.

Nopie,
Hi. I don't have a problem with onions but I've discovered that cashew nuts are a problem for me. I've had them twice since I started this WOE & I just craved for "illegal" junk food afterwards. Now I try to stay away from cashew nuts eventhough it's one of my fave food. Good luck & happy low-carbing! Bebe |
