Vitamin Question

I was wondering if someone could help me out as far as what vitamins most people generally take. I have been taking the GNC womens multivitamin and then L-Glutamine when I eat extra carbs since it seems to help control my cravings. Also where do most of you get your supplements, GNC's prices seem high and I was wondering if anyone knew better places to buy them.

Thanks
Christina

hi Christina,

Many of us take a general, good quality multi-vitamin & mineral supplement such as Centrum, Quest or Jamieson, which you can purchase just about everywhere. Look for a Super or Stress formula, as these will have extra B-vitamins. Make sure that whatever brand you choose states on the label that it contains no sugar or starch ;).

You might want to consider taking extra Calcium & Magnesium .. adults require 1000 - 1200mg of calcium daily, and the daily supplements never have enough in them. You can find many brands that have cal and mag together in one pill, either 333mg/167mg (take 3 per day) or 500mg/250mg (take 2 per day).

Extra potassium would be helpful too ... you can take as a pill supplement. These usually have 99mg each ... the Eades in Protein Power recommend taking one tablet 4 times a day for the first few weeks, then one tablet a day for as long as you are on the weight loss phase of the diet. However, the least expensive way to take potassium is to use a salt-substitute, such as NoSalt, NuSalt, HalfSalt and Morton's Lite Salt. You use these like regular salt to sprinkle on food at the table, and they are fine to use in cooking too. The first two are 100% potassium, the last two are a blend of potassium and regular sodium salt. Cutting back on regular table salt and salty processed foods is a good idea anyway, as this will allow your body to balance the levels of potassium more efficiently.

Hope this helps,

Doreen

My two cents

Hi Christina....

I have found great supplements at my local health food store. I look for whole food or organic supplements. I usually spend more than average on my supplements especially on a program such as this where we do not get all of our nutrients from the foods we eat. I love a brand called Super Nutrition for Women... as my multiple vitamin/mineral. Plus it has alot of other great stuff...

Christina, once you've decided what you are going to take keep your eyes peeled for sales ;) I find costco / price club has some great prices on vitamins and supplements as do the bulk stores that carry them. I will often get an extra bottle when they are on sale; check expiration dates but with the rate at which we go through them they don't usually last more than a few months :)
