Fitday and Calories Burned

Could someone please explain the area in Fitday where it explains about calories burned. For example how does it calculate the Basal rate. I have been entering for about a week and am surprised at home many calories it says I have burned - didn't think it was that many as I am fairly sedentary.

Your basal is determined by your size, age and activity level. I just purchased their software for the PC and it even adds in calories used for digestion.
