Rudimentary question on Cottage cheese...
 
I've never had cottage cheese before and wanted to try it today. Just curious, what's the difference between small curd, large curd, no curd etc...?

Oh, and how does it taste? Kind of like cheese, I presume?

I personally prefer the large curd. I'm not sure what the differences are, that's just my preference. I would say that the closest thing it tastes like would be sour cream.

Well...I've never seen "no curd" cottage cheese...except when I put the regular stuff in the blender. The only difference between small curd and large curd is the size of the chunks. I prefer the small curd myself. The taste is hard to describe...I wouldn't really call it "cheezy"...but it's good.

i preferr it to ordinary cheese because of it's moistness and the different texture it adds to meals. apparently it has more carbs than ordinary cheese but i found a brand here in NZ that is very low compared to most.

dunno about the difference in curd size though. and yip...taste more like sour cream than cheese. :)

It doesn't taste like cheese or sour cream.

Do you know what Ricotta is? It tastes like that. In fact, it's made the same way.

Oh, or the "Paneer" in for example, Sag Paneer?

Tastes like that.

When they say sour cream I think they mean as opposed to like, Cheddar or Gouda, but it's SO NOT "sour" like sour cream is. It doesn't have that "zing."

Sour cream is wonderful! I use it on salads insread of mayonnaise and I eat it with a spoon sweetened with splenda and/or a few chopped strawberries as a dessert.
Cottage cheese tastes more cheesy than sour cream in my opinion.

I love cottage cheese too! I personally like the small curd but really, the size of curd boils down to a preference of texture. Cottage cheese is such a great food because it can be used as a savory or a sweet dish. For a sweet dish I add a little splenda, walnuts, berries, melon, peaches or apples, sometimes I add cinnamon. It can also be blended in smoothies or shakes or used to make a cheesecake. For the savory as RC said, it's great on salads! I have also used it for lasagna's, squash casseroles and for stuffing tomatoes. :)

May I ask for a 100-million ways to eat cottage cheese? I'm switching this week from yogurt to cottage cheese for a snack, and I'm somewhat apprehensive. Plus when I'm at home, can I microwave it or something to make a nice hot snack? Please help!

LOL even though I'm not a picky eater, I am not too crazy about cottage cheese. I wish I could be there to see your reaction when you eat some cottage cheese, Fred :lol:

I say do the protein drink instead. It goes down much quicker than cottage cheese you know? Gulp, swallow, done! :p

I prefer the small curd when I eat it, and I prefer it sweetened as a dessert. I dont think it tastes like ricotta but the texture may be a little similar with cottage cheese being a bit more runny and cheesey.

I am not a big fan of it altogether. I mix it with yogurt sometimes or I used to eat the kind with pineapples in it, but thats a no no here. I also used to mix nestle quick into it, and make it into a sweet chocolate thing. I suppose something like that can be done maybe with davincis or splenda and cocoa. It would be very dark though.


Cottage cheese isnt my favorite food to eat and wouldnt be my first choice, which is why I just dont buy it.

I ate tons of it while on BFL and other super low fat diets. I would eat the fat free kind with some tomato and cucumber and a rice cake. Yuck! now I am having bad memories again.

I either eat it with a dash of vanilla and splenda, or I mix it in with beaten eggs with the vanilla and splenda and it is good! (can also use ricotta or cream cheese).

I love it with some fresh chives and pepper. I don't always have the chives on hand, so just sprinkled with pepper is great.

Here is an idea......

Buy a small container of it and have a taste. If you find you do not like it
then you are not out very much money but you will know for sure what it tastes like. It has a very mild taste btw.
