how do you know how many carbs

are in fresh fruits and veggies? Thanks

measure the diameter of the fruit and divide by the square root of the circumference.

or, just go look on line for a carb counter at the atkins nutritional site...i think there might be a carb counter link here as well...

atkins

I use the carb counter at atkins. You can print it off which I have done and carry around with me. :)

ok, i found the carb counter

but i am confuzed, if i read it right, then watermelon has 7.5 g of carbs, so i don't understand how this diet can be good for you when you can't eat a lot of fresh fruits and veggies.

Perhaps you need to read the chapters on the science behind the diet, as well as concentrating on just the carb count of everything in sight.

The Acceptable Foods List is what you go by initially. It is not only based on lower carb choices, but also low glycemic load (how they effect your blood sugar levels) products.

I use two different sources for looking up carb counts:

Nutrition Data's Nutrition Facts

and

USDA (has even a downloadable version for your home computer)

Fruit is ok, in moderation, and once you are out of the first 2 week induction period.

I never eat fruit, its just not my thing all the time. I'm healthy as can be.

As the late Dr. Atkins once said, and I quote "Nobody has ever gotten fat from eating fruit."

Eh? I eat vegetables at just about every meal, and quite a few fruits too. Lets see, over the course of a normal day I probably have 5 cups of leafy greens, a cup or two of something like asparagus, brussel sprouts, brocolli, artichokes, etc. Unless I have something like freshly grilled asparagus with olive oil and salt... then I'm likely to eat half a bundle or more at a serving. *DROOL*

www.calorieking.com has been an invaluable resource for me.

www.fitday.com is a great site.

horsenerd,
watermelon has 5.1 net carbs for 1/2 cup according to Dr. Atkins' Carb counter book. After the first 2 weeks of induction (which allows 20 carbs) you can move into OWL and increase your veggies and add in fruit. I eat more veggies now than ever in my life and enjoy 1 or 2 servings of fruit most days.
