fiber adjustment

Does anyone know about how long it takes your body to adjust to a different amount of fiber? I've been getting a ton more fiber then I am used to thanks to the addition of somethings into my diet. While this is good and all, my stomach is wanting to rip out of my body :( It seems it's doing too good of a job in the cleaning out department and I'm in the bathroom way to much. I would rather not cut back on the fiber, rather let my body adjust ot the higher amount if it will. Does anyone know how long I should give it though before I give in and cut back?

(there is a slight stomach flu going around the family, but I am pretty sure the bathroom issues ar emore directly related ot new eating habits)

I really cant say how long it takes to adjust, but kudos to you on adding more fiber. I am trying to add more in to my diet as well. Hope everything straightens out for ya :)

My daughter had to add a ton of fiber to her diet for her sluggish colon and I think it took her two or three weeks to adjust to it. Not long at all really. If it bothers you too much you can add slowly increasing it by 5 or so grams a week. Personally I would rather add it all at once and then let my body adjust. It seems quicker that way.

Blah. If it's going to take 2-3 weeks I am investing heavily in Imodium

Seems like it would be more likely to be the flu thing, but maybe with your trim and fit body, you're almost fighting it totally off without getting the other symptoms. Regardless....giving your body a little "help" wouldn't be a bad thing (I personally like the "pink" bottle). The other possibility is that some of those "fiber things" are upseting your stomach not because of the fiber, but just because of what they are. (e.g....it's not fiber, but when I eat garlic I always get more "reading time")

Anyway, hope everything works out in "the end". hehehe...snort..hehe

I've jumped from around 10-15g of fiber a day (which I was fairly regular on) to alot more. Today was the first day I actually put anything into fitday and fuond I had around 50g of fiber. No wonder my poor tummy is howling. Not to mention the dairy on top of it. I think if I give it time though I will adjust.

Daddio - I hate the pink bottle. The one thing I absolutly will not so is the liquid imodium. It was bad going down and hell coming back up *shudder* there's an appitite suppressing memory if ever there was one.

DaddioM Tue, Apr-20-04 16:47

ahhh...the dairy...yes, that can be difficult to adjust back to as well I hear.

btw... thanks for sharing the "pink" story....one MORE thing I won't be able to put in my mouth anymore ROFL....jk

Gosh Lady, no suggestions, I just hope you feel better!!!!!

Daddio you are a riot. I love your posts!

LadyBelle Tue, Apr-20-04 17:37

It wasn't the pink stuff that did it :) It was that imodium. Gah nightmares and all :)

I know dairy can upset my tummy. But it is soooo good. and small amounts or cultured dairy usually isn't that bad :)

Now didn't your mother tell you sticking things in your mouth was a bad idea ;)

This is a good question, LadyBelle. I was wondering today how long it will take for the fiber in the lc grains to start helping things along. Ate the first Sunday and another serving today and so far nothing. I surely do hope it doesn't take too long. I would almost welcome being in the bathroom too much at this point. Last week I added a small amount of flax and it worked for about 3 days....then back to moving very slowly.

Hope you get better soon, drink tons of water, warm drinks and if you get really stuck, do an enema..กกก!!!! not fun, but it helps for one time. It seems you figure out that it was 50g of fiber, so I think tomorrow morning you will feel better, also take walks or exercise, that will help with the pain.

A cup of hot water with a slice of lemon in it, sipped first thing in the morning before eating anything else can certainly get the pipes lubricated.
And if you're eating that much fiber, be sure that your water intake is up to 10 -12 8 oz glasses a day! Think of fiber as a broom that sweeps clean the walls of the intestins.(sp) But, a broom also needs lots of water to really clean out that dirt from the corners.

How did you raise your fiber so much?

eddiesgirl Wed, Apr-21-04 05:54

Please, Please, Please...tell me what you are eating to get that much fibre. I eat all my veggies a day and I'm still having issues with not going. I tried psylium husks but that's not working, so I went to sugar free benefibre. It works, but only sometimes. I would much rather get my fibre in foods. It would be great if you could let me know what you are eating. Thanks ahead of time.
