to any New Zealanders Interested.

Hi there...

I was chatting to my sister in New Zealand today and I told her I was on Atkins program again. Despite the success I had before I came to the US, she told me about a show that was airing on TV One tonight at 8.30pm (NZ Time) called Fat or Fiction. http://tvone.nzoom.com/best/story.html?story_atkins.inc She was concerned cos she heard that Atkins was a 'killer'...

I guess I was a bit defensive of this lifestyle and explained to her about the industries that are suffering as a result of low carb eating trying to seek revenge and discredit it, so I gave her some sites to take a look at..
http://www.cnn.com/2004/HEALTH/02/10/atkins.widow/
http://www.prweb.com/releases/2004/2/prweb104355.htm along with the Atkins site if she or anyone here is interested.

I thought I'd just post this in case there was anyone in NZ who wanted to watch the show to be prepared for the doubters tomorrow. :) Not sure if it has aired in the US or not.

Anyway... have a great day

Perhaps some of you Kiwis might like to point out to TVOne New Zealand that;

"Dr Atkins, who urged dieters to forego carbohydrates in favour of protein, weighed in at a hefty 18 stone and four pounds when he slipped on an icy New York pavement last year."

(on their web site)

- is a very tired, very old lie, and perhaps they would like to check the facts and at least correct their promotional material.

If the program they are promoting is the one made by BBC's Horizon team shown here recently, then I would not get too excited by that either.

Cheers,

Malcolm

I wholeheartedly agree with the garbage some media puts out about eating 'Low Carb' when they have in fact not even tried this way of life! It only takes one person who has an opinion against it to abuse their position... But when both sides are presented HONESTLY then folk have a chance to make an informed choice about eating this lifestyle. If they just gave it a few weeks, they'd find out what we (on the forum) already know. IT WORKS!!! :D

There was a program on TV here in the US last night that I taped... perhaps I should send that (or suggest they get that) to show on NZ television! It was a excellent show about Low Carbing called 'Low Carb Revolution'. If anyone in the US reads this in time, it is on the Food channel at 5pm Eastern time today!

I couldn't find anything about the show itself, but here is one of the guys who appeared on it. It looks like a really interesting area on that site.

By the way... if anyone in NZ would like to see that show I taped, let me know and I will endeavour to send it to you. You will have to have a VCR that plays NTSC to view it tho.

I just discovered this guy has a show called 'Low Cab & Lovin' It'... Must watch it :)

Have a great day

I guess New Zealand is still years behind in discovering LC lifestyle.Everytime we get any sort of reasonable press it is acompanied by advise from the "expert" dietitians who almost to a man (or usually a woman) put this lifestyle down...Dangerous,no long term data, damages kidneys,...."we MUST eat a "balanced diet".Makes me sick.Every mention of Atkins in the media is acompanied by a plate of greasy fried eggs and bacon,or obese people eating burgers,or if in print,a headline describing the Atkins approach as being "controversial" or "a fad" or just downright dangerous.
Interestingly,I have written over a dozen letters to various media outlets here in New Zealand, pointing out the advantages of a LC lifestyle and how it has helped me to not only lose weight, but to also lower my blood sugar to normal levels etc, etc. Not one has been published. In my opinion it is all about the influence of big business.Diabetes and related health diseases are now epidemic in this country, but media is driven by advertising, and many sugar laden companies advertise.Perhaps the biggest irony was reported in my local rag last week.Headline.... "Fizzy drinks cause obesity"..no mention of the fact that sugar was the biggest culprit, nope, although the article did mention that "diet fizzy drinks " did not seem to be a problem. The article was a reprint of a survey done in the UK. All references to sugar as the possible cause had been deleted.
Still I am speading the gospel as much as I can,I have made contact with several other Kiwis trying thec LC lifestyle.Things will change, but sadly to late for many of us.

Holy quacamolie you're right! Just look at the average supermarket. 80% or more of everything in there is SO bad for you, and *depends* on the insulin/sugar rush for the marketability factor. It IS about big business, and it is another sad example of how greed and sefishness can overcome or could over what *should* be common sense.
Many in the nutritional career area don't realise that they are being dishonest I like to imagine though. Yet I'd truly like to see one, anyone of them, give an honest, thourough and clear response to this article, after reading the simple four pages that as far as I can indiputably refute the whole or major crux of what their entire career and schooling has taught them:
