sugarless gum
is sugarless gum ok to chew even if it is sweetened with asparatme and not splenda? It says it has 2 carbs and 2 sugar alchohols. so is the net carb 0?

I've wondered about this a lot. I do chew sugarless gum frequently, because I just want to, but am always a tad nervous about the sugar alcohols. Count the net carbs as zero, but don't go overboard~— too many sugar alcohols will stall most people.

i chew Trident sugarless all the time. Each piece only has 1 sugar alcohol in it, i dont have a problem at all. So id say yes, go ahead and chew it. Just dont consume a whole pack a day or anything.

From what I've read, aspartame isn't always a problem. If you consume aspartame and keep losing weight, great, no problem! You can tell if it's a problem for you if you stop losing weight, get rid of the aspartame, and resume losing weight.
Be careful with those sugar alcohols, though, they're laxatives. :( I found that out the hard way...you should be fine if you don't consume too many, though! |
I think Atkin's says about 15% of people will have a nutra sweet reaction - I knew I was one long before doing Atkin's. I used to chew Equal gum all the time and one piece led to another and another and sometimes OTHER foods (oh no!)
I now chew cinnamon Trident with sucralose and count each piece as 1 carb (because of fillers I think it is). I get a huge container at Costco for a very reasonable price (works out to be only 50 cents a pack of 18 sticks). |

I am not sure what else is in trident but the sucralose in commercial products have no carbs because they use the liquid form of sucralose. The granular form has 1 carb due to the maltodextrin that is used to bulk it up. |
