I need advice about sodium!

I have found that if I have more than 3500 mg in a day, I stall or gain. Also, the reccomended amount per day is 2500 mg. I can't find out a way to get 1700 calories with that litte sodium. For example, today for breakfast I had 40 g of cheese and a green tea. For lunch I had a chicken breast, wing, and thigh and salad (cucumber, lettuce, olive oil, and vinegar). For dinner I planned on having a steak, but that would bring me to almost 4000. I guess I'll have a hamburger. Any suggestions to reduce sodium? Is there anything that cancels out sodium like fiber cancels carbs? Also, is there any list on the Internet of how many grams of nutrients one should have daily? Thanks

The only thing you've listed that has any significant amount of salt in it is the cheese. The rest if you're cooking it yourself shouldn't have much at all. So I take it you are adding salt to what you are cooking? If so, then you can cut back the salt. The tastes buds do adjust to it. I cook with no salt at all and have to remember to salt when people come by.

If you are buying your food precooked then it probably is very high in sodium, and I recommend cooking from scratch. It's fun and healthy :)

Have you tried the potassium salts? Maybe that would affect you less and it will get you a little potassium too.

I don't believe there is anything that cancels out sodium.

There is nothing which cancels out sodium as Squid said. However, using 'low salt' or another of the low sodium salts will help balance out the sodium. The important thing is the balance between sodium and potassium.

Sweating will help get rid of excess salt in your body. You could try excercise, a sauna or even a hot bath might help.

By the way, fiber doesn't cancel out carbs - it's just that in America they call fiber a carb so you can subtract it from the total.

Oh. I just use what Fitday has listed as for sodium for each of these things. I don't put salt on them. Is Fitday wrong?

RCFletcher Sun, Jan-25-04 11:18

Maybe. Fitday seems to assume you add salt to nearly everything. I ignore it when it comes to sodium. (But I never use common salt either).

Mayeb I should ignore it.- It's been making me crazy lately. I think I'm gonna take a week break from Fitday and see what happens

Look at the ingredients listed when you add an item to your menu. It often does assume salt, but I think you can remove it ... maybe.

One more question. If you experience a gain from excess sodium intake, it's not actually inhibiting fat loss is it? It's just a momentary water gain, correct?. If I'm not measuring weight but rather just body fat percentage, should I worry about sodium (to a reasonable extent)? Thanks

I'm on bp meds that cause me to lose too much sodium, so I don't ever have to worry about it, but I'll give you the same advice everyone has given me. DRINK YOUR WATER. It really helps you lose the water weight :)

I drink ridiculous amounts of water, so I don't think that's the problem.
