Donair or Gyros
This is a recipe I adapted to LC. It really does taste like a Donair. The sauce can also be made with yogurt, cucumber & garlic to make Gyros.
Meat 4 lb Ground beef 2 t Onion powder 4 t Garlic powder 2 t Oregano, dried 2 t Parsley, dried 2 t Ground pepper 2 t Chili powder 2 t Cayenne pepper 2 eggs Sauce 8 oz Cream Cheese - softened 6 t Splenda (or to taste) 2 cloves Garlic - chopped 3 t Vinegar (or to taste) Toppings 1/2 Green Pepper - chopped 1/2 Tomato - chopped 1/4 Onion - chopped 1 Regrind ground beef until you have a smooth paste. You don't have to do this but it makes for a better texture. I use my food processor. 2 Add spices and two eggs. Kneed until well mixed. 3 Press mixture tightly into meat loaf pan. Cover with aluminum foil and bake at 300° for 1-1/2 to 2 hours, checking it every half hour, and drain the fat off if necessary. 4 In the meantime combine cream cheese, chopped garlic, Splenda & vinegar to taste and mix until smooth. 5 Cut thin slices from meat and quickly fry before topping with chopped vegetables and sauce. |
Interesting! I'll print this and add it to my recipe box. I love Gyros!

Yum, Yum
I can't wait to try this, I love donairs, a LC version is greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much, I'll be make this today. Can you freeze the meat? How long does it stay fresh when stored in the fridge? Jo-Ann 2 |
I've never tried freezing it but I'm sure it would freeze just fine. Only keep it in the fridge as long as you would cooked hamburger.
Let me know how you like it. |
This recipe seems kinda strange for Gyros. This is how I make mine:
Ground beef in a sautee pan with onions, spices (cumin, chili powder, salt, pepper, minced garlic). Grate some cucumber into sour cream, add garlic powder, alil salt, pepper. Cut up some lettuce, tomato. Wash a large lettuce leaf and pile it all in then roll it. Et voila! JUST LIKE A GYRO! Gyros are my fav food! I'd tried to make LC versions of flatbread with LC bake mix but they were gross!! I find the lettuce leaf is a very successful alternative to real flatbread. |
Gyros? HMMM, never heard of 'em.
They sound interesting ;) |
Wow you've never heard of them!! I'm in shock! LoL. Go to a middle eastern restaurant or cafe, they'd dif have them. Even probably some time of festival. I first had mine when I was little at the Arts & Craft festival. In alot of pizza places in NYC they have them too, but I dont really know why! LoL. If you can't find them, then go on and make them yourself the LC way. Traditionally they are made some roasted meat, usually a combo of beef & lamb, but you can easily do all beef or all lamb. I've done it with chicken too, and it was just as good! In greece they also use Pork. I find ground beef is the easiest and cheapest method for at-home. Unless you have some left over bits of a beef, pork, or lamb roast.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm a huge fan of gyros but way too much of a cooking novice to figure out what goes into them. ^_^ I'm going to try this tonight! |
Good luck with it! It's not too difficult to figure out what goes into ethnic foods. Just learn the dominate flavors in the various ethnic foods and you can make just about anything. Good luck with it and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Just remember to add in extra things that you like.

thank you....I'll be making these for dinner tonight. I'm gonna use the low fat tortillas to wrap them in.
:yum: :yum: |
Hi. Want to try this recipe soon. How do you make the cucumber sauce? Thanks!
|
Just cut the cucumber in half, scoup out the seeds and toss them, then grade the cucumber on a grater (prob large grate size), mince some garlic, then mix it all together some some sour cream.

Are you sure you'll have low FAT tortilla's? Don't you mean low CARB tortillas?? |
I found a simple, authentic recipe for Gyros on the net that is quite low-carb, and tastes delicious!
1 lb. ground lamb 1/2 cup finely chopped onion (I grated mine) 2 tsp minced garlic 3/4 tsp salt 1/2 tsp ground marjoram 1/2 tsp ground rosemary 1/4 tsp black pepper Mix the above ingredients together, and let it sit in the fridge for 1-2 hours. Blend in a food processor to get the right consistency. Bake 45 minutes - 1 hour at 325, pouring off the liquid. You want it to be a little dry. I baked mine in a bread pan, so I can easily reheat it when I want leftovers and get the crispy outside again. Serve with tzatziki sauce: 1 small cucumber, de-seeded and peeled greek yoghurt garlic to taste (lots!) Grate the cucumber. Stir the cucumber, garlic and yoghurt together. Voila! Forget the pita, and you have a delicious low-carb dish. I serve with some tomato and lettuce. This tastes *really* authentic! |
Wow I am so making that tomorrow. Sounds SOOOO good!
