Be careful of what you wish for

Listen to this. My husband is not a LCer although he is becoming enlightened about the low carb WOE. He is very supportive and provides low carb selections of foods for meals ( he is the household chef :) ).
There is a co-worker who is 100 lbs overweight and his doctor told him that if he were to do Atkins he would die. We was recently diagnosed with diabetes and his stupid nutritionist put him on a high carb diet. You heard me correctly. Well hubby, with his knowledge of LCing told the guy that he would be dead in a year!!! He also gave me the assignment to straighten out his nutritionist at this guy's next appt. I am glad hubby has so much faith in this woe but he is going to get me in trouble. However, I have gathered information that was researched by other doctors regarding the importance of a low carb lifestyle. I want him to see that other doctors support low carb and why they do ( I have included Dr. Bernstein's research ). I will also have blood work next week that I will give him so that he sees what this diet can do for him. My hopes are that he takes these findings to his doctor and nutritionist and ask them to explain why my woe is better than theirs. This guy needs to take an active lead in the way he eats and deals with opinions of professionals. I hope that I can help without someone telling me that they are the ones with the degree not me.

Wish me luck and any suggestions are welcome :yay:

Hi black57,
There's a difference between diabetic type I and type II. My brother has diabetic type I and wouldn't do good on Atkins. There is a relation between weight and type II. That's why type II diabetics do Atkins. That's what I think. I do not know if the co-worker has type I or II.
It also can be that I am wrong about this. If anyone knows, please let me know.

Type 1 diabetics can certainly do well on low carb. :)

Dr Richard Bernstein, author of Dr Bernstein's Diabetes Solution, is a type 1. In fact, he was able to reverse his diabetes related kidney failure by following LC.

He does suggest, as I believe did Dr Atkins, that insulin dependent diabetics should be under close medical supervision when they take up low carbing.

Cheers.

Me Thinks

I assumed that he was type II since he is an adult. At the moment he is not on insulin but if he continues to eat high carbs, I would wager that he will be on prescribed insulin, eventually. Any comments?

Type I diabetics do not manufacture sufficient insulin and are insulin dependant-usually from youth. Type II diabetics form from insulin resistance, weight gain, and a few other health problems. It is also called adult onset diabetes (although kids can and are developing it) and can be diet and exercise controlled. The body continues to produce insulin, but there are difficulties in utilization in which medication and/or diet are necessary to control insulin resistant cells. As Rosebud said, LC diets can help with both types-by lowering the amount of insulin needed in type I or many times eliminating the need for meds and insulin in type II.

Good luck with that..
Nutritionalists are brainwashed by the food pyramid.

Why not advise this guy just to get a second opinion.. Or talk to other diabetics who have had success on low carb..

Slimshady, I did think of seeking a second opinion but I never discussed it with hubby. I shall mention that. I have also discussed this wiht diabetics here. I also ran a copy of an essay where the writer low carbs. He is a doctor and does his version of a lc diet. He says that his family has been low carbing for 40 years. he uses this diet to treat diabetes.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Yes, it is online at

http://www.second-opinions.co.uk/diabetes.html
I am not sure if you will be able to click on this but you can put it in your search engine if it doesn't work.

It discusses how doctors have been recommending high carb, low fat diets as a means to treat diabetes but the evidence shows something different. Hmmm, what could it be?
