Using soy and flax w/ hypothyroid?

Hi! I just read a thread that said you should not eat soy or flax seed if you are hypothyroid. I have been eating both of them since staring this WOE May 07, 2003. I have lost 20 lbs. Can anyone give me the low-down on this?

Soy and soy-derivatives, such as the isoflavone supplements they promote for menopause symptoms can suppress the thyroid .. and possibly even trigger problems in persons with normal thyroid function.

From about.com's Soy-Thyroid information pages:
Quote:
If you have a diagnosed or undiagnosed thyroid problem, or a history of autoimmune disease, overconsumption of soy isoflavones can potentially trigger a thyroid condition. Soy foods can worsen an existing diagnosed thyroid problem in many people. In both cases the symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, and depression or moodiness are often overlooked and hard to diagnose.

On the other hand, flax oil and flaxseed are beneficial for thyroid health. I've seen rumours that flax is somehow harmful to the thyroid, but that's just a myth. There's more discussion about flax and thyroid posted here.

Thanks

I find that information to be very interesting. I have been Hypothyroid for six years. I also have used alot of soy based foods. No wonder I am such a slow loser. Will be interested to see how things go once the soy is out of my system.
Thank you very much.

My Endo told me that overconsumption of SOY can trigger hypo in many people. She told me to stay away from all soy products when I was dx with hypo.

Watch out for black cohosh too. Does the same thing. More phytoestrogens.

Just talked to a friend that is a Nutritionist and in a quick explanations said that the only soy that is good for you is if its been furmented like soy sauce , Almased and some other stuff I din't catch she was busy, But basically she said that soyflour and milk and all thoes products including baby formula is really bad for you that it sucks the nutrients out of you.

Sorry for the bad spelling
