Any tips for fixed income folks to afford LC products?

Has anybody done a cost analysis between Splenda and stevia as to which is the most cost effective to buy? Have some poverty level, fixed income seniors wanting some help.

Hi MizSteaks,

If you conduct a search of the forums, you'll find several threads (such as this one) where members give tips on how to low carb on a budget.

Personally, I just buy a lot of mince (Aussie for ground meat ;) ) and stewing meat, rather than steak and more expensive meats. And I also check vegie prices, and pretty much stick to the cheapest.

Can't help you with the stevia versus Splenda I'm afraid, because I've never found stevia. I know it is available here somewhere, but i'm happy to stick with Splenda. I try not to use it too often anyway, because I have a sneaking suspicion my old bod thinks it's all sugar. :daze:

All the best!

In the US stevia is considered a suppliment while splenda is found in the grocery section. Splenda is usualy alot cheaper. The reason many choose stevia is there is no carbs in the liquid kind and the powdered is mixed with a healthy fiber. Splenda is not available in liquid to the public and the packets or granual has fillers that contain carbs. It's trace, so don't sweat it and just limit how many you use a day to a reasonable amount. Unless you have a problem with intestinal yeast or a bad reaction with splenda, I'd say get that.

This WOE doesn't have to be as expensive as we sometimes let it be because we buy the bars and special foods.

For artificial sweetners -asparttame is the only one discouraged. Sweet and Low with saccharin is approved on Atkins and is a lot cheaper then splenda. Ive seen it in the dollar stores.

There is always tuna, eggs are excellent value, and chicken is still a bargain when you hit the sales.

Bake mixes are just soy flour and whey combined-check the recipe forum here-you can bake up muffins and breads for much less then the packkaged mixes. Remember some of the things you are passing on were pretty expensive. Good luck on your journey.

here in the north a box of 100 pkts of stevia is 9.99 and a box of 100 pkts of splenda is 6.99. sweet n low and sugar twin run around 2.99 to 3.99. they all have carbs due to the filler so i guess it boils down to taste and your pocketbook.

Thanks so much for the help! The couple I am helping are in their 80's and live alone on a fixed income of just over $500 a month! They both have type 2 diabetes so the artifical sweeteners are important to them since they both drink 'sweet tea'. I believe that is their only indulgence. They refuse any monetary help from friends or neighbors so this is one way to help them...with information...and an occasional 'care package' disguised as 'cleaning out the frig'.

if you have a sam's club nearby, they sell splenda 700 pk boxes for $14.
