Eating nuts during induction

Does anybody know why nuts and seeds are not allowed during induction on the Atkins program? 1 oz of Almonds for example, only has 2 net carbs. They're allowed after the 1st 2 weeks if you stay on induction but not during the 1st 2 weeks. They REALLY help me satisfy my cravings for salty snacks but I don't want to eat them if it's really a big deal. I don't want to sabotage my weight loss.

Thanks,

Rick

It has to do with the impact on your blood sugar levels. Atkin's did research on what foods kept the insulin response low - when your insulin levels are low, you are burning more fat.

Induction is designed to get your motor switched over from burning sugars to burning fat. The acceptable food list is designed to make that happen. It's a way of forcing your body out of old habits and into a new biochemical state.

Hi Tracy,

I realize all that but what causes the insulin in the blood is eating carbs (especially carbs that are high on the glycemic index) and almonds only have 2 carbs/oz and are low on the GI. That's why I can't understand why they aren't allowed during the first 2 weeks of induction. Also, why are they not allowed during the 1st 2 weeks of induction but ARE allowed if you stay on induction past 2 weeks?

It may be because they are a classic binge food, hard to stop munching on them once you start. I think it's one of the ways Dr. Atkins gets you to control your calories without actually counting.

Rick,

Nuts are very high in calories and fat. Especially during Induction, cravings are not always under control. It's way too easy to overdo it with Nuts when your cravings aren't controlled.

Also, Nuts often contain mold, which can encourage candida growth.

I think Atkins says to omit them to prove that "atkins works" and that anyone can lose weight on the diet.

Best to leave them out, at first, I think.
