Nuts!

I love em! But am just recently discovering that they may be a pitfall on TSP. (I can eat them by the handfuls, and cashews are beginning to do me in). And, in her book, the serving sizes are listed in ounces. So, how do I interpret how much .75 oz is? Do I need a food measuring thingie?

Hi Cicely,

I would definitely get a "food measuring thingy" aka scale ;). I'm the same way with nutz!

I have a little rinky dink Weight Watchers one I bought from Salvation Army or Goodwill years ago - it serves its purpose. I weighed an ounce of string cheese (pre measured) to test it out. Ate half - tested the half ounce - works fine.

Since we're on the food measuring thingy ;) I'll throw in my 2 cents. Do I ever shut up? ;) Yes, I'm on a forum posting frenzy!

ANYWAY, I have one of those Sunbeam digital postal scales. I ordered it through Staples and even got free delivery. Best money I ever invested b/c I can put my bowl on the scale and then press the tare button and it goes to "zero". You can keep pressing the tare button if you add multiple items to your bowl. Since I'm terribly lazy, this is the best option for me. Besides, it's more accurate than measuring 1 1/4 cups of strawberries.

Oh yea those nuts, I don't even buy them anymore!!! When I was on Atkins I had stocked up on all kinds of nuts thinking they wouldn't be a problem - in the end I put them all up on the top shelves of my cupboards so I would have to drag a chair over to get to them (laziness won out about half of the time). The others are right that a scale is the best, though some carb/calorie counters will give you an estimate of how many nuts equals how many carbs IE 20 small almonds. For me I just don't buy them anymore

Thanks y'all!

Wanda that sounds like a great scale! I gotta check that one out. Maybe be a bit $$$ for me right now, but Christmas list .....

Yep, I'm afraid that's what's gonna happen to me. I really want those almonds though. Tryptophan :)

I'm the same way with cashews (seems to be a common affliction). I have found I can control myself better with raw, unsalted nuts. I could eat a cup of the salted cashews from Cosco, they are so good! Pistachios I like almost as much, but they are harder for me to big out on because shelling them slows me down. :p

Cicely,

Try Target...it seems like I got a good digital scale for about $20.00. I think it was at Service Merchandise before they went out of business in my area, but I'm sure Target has something similar...or K-mart or Walmart. A lot of the non-digital scales are also good.

I got some great little 2 oz. Tupperware containers from Target, one of which I keep with the nuts. It holds an ounce of nuts when full to the top line (I did weigh it the first time,) so I scoop out my ounce of nuts and put the rest away. That reallly helps me avoid overdoing. A can of cashews on the counter would quickly be my undoing!

Beth

p.s. Those little Tupperware jobbers are also great for take-along salad dressing or cream if I'm going for coffee. No leaks. I guess Tupperware is pulling out of Target, though, as it hasn't been good for their direct sales, so time is limited.

I often wonder if we're addicted to the salt. I can control the nut butters, but I'm hopeless with salted nuts. I can't keep them in the house. You control your addiction with unsalted, raw nuts. Dr. Wilson has people with adrenal fatigue increase their salt consumption so I often wonder if there's merit to the "salt" thing.

BTW Caverjen, I just LOVE your new avatar!!!

Pistachios

Did a little test this morning and figured out that pistachios in their shells weigh exactly twice as much as the meats alone. So now I can weigh out my pistachios and put away the package like I do with other nuts. (I can also go back to Costco and do a valid price comparison on their shelled pistachios.)

In case anyone cares...

Thanks for all the responses y'all! Gotta go look for that scale now. I also like the tupperware thingie. That sounds great too!

Wanda, what you're saying about the salt so makes sense to me. I sure crave that.

Hey ladies,

Ugh... I completely overdid the NUTS last night on account of some major PMS sugar cravings......

I think you guys were right about being addicted to the salt -- Oh well -- at least I didn't eat sweets and Ice Cream like I would normally do around TTOM. Is it a victory or a lesson learned??

By my count 23 Costco almonds ~ 1 oz, so 23 raw almonds = my daily dose. Like others have mentioned I can control my lust for raw almonds & pecans, but the salted cashews & pistachios...moth to a flame.
