Pregnancy and Low Carb?

Hey guys,

my doc has me on a 45g/day low carb diet. My husband and i are also trying to conceive, my doctor knows this. I have polycycstic ovarian syndrome, therefore the low carb diet is highly recommended as i could be prone to insulin resistance, heart disease, type II diabetes etc.

i was just wondering if low carb is ok DURING pregnancy, i am sure you have to up the carbs, but what's a good amount?

of course i am going to ask my doctor at my next visit, but your ideas would be appreciated.

thanks

Dr. Atkins recommends maintenance level carbs during pregnancy. However, I would ask your doctor.

There are a lot of online support groups for pregnant lcers. You will find the gammut of women there. Those who did 30g-50g of carbs their entire pregnancy and those who warn against it. But you will also find support in whatever you and your doctor choose.

Good luck!

I've been low carbing for a while and was low carbing when I became pregnant... I continued with a pretty low carb diet for the first 3 months although it was hard because of the morning sickness, then went back to a maintenance level diet after the morning sickness faded...

Now I probably consume about 70 carbs per day... It seems high for low carb, but it's purely fruit, veggies and low carb whole wheat bread... I don't allow myself sugar or anything white because it will inevitably set off cravings...

I'm also insulin resistent and have pcos... My doc actually wants me to keep all sugar and starches out of my diet because our baby has dilated kidneys...

Good luck to you!
